  abstract = {This empirical application investigates the eventual presence of credit constraints using a panel of French farmers. The credit-constrained profit maximization model proposed by Färe, Grosskopf, and Lee is extended in three ways. First, we rephrase the model in terms of directional distance functions to allow duality with the profit function. Second, we model credit constraints in the short-run and investment constraints in the long-run using short- and long-run profit functions. Third, we lag the expenditure constraint one year to account for the separation between planning and production. We find empirical evidence of credit and investment constraints. Financially unconstrained farmers are larger, perform better, and seem to benefit from a virtuous circle where access to financial markets allows better productive choices.},

  abstract = {The shortage function, an important tool in production theory, measures potential increases in outputs and decreases in inputs for a given direction g at a given date. To develop a temporal version of technical efficiency measurement, we introduce the concept of a temporal shortage function. This temporal efficiency measure is easily computed using linear programming. We also establish a duality result stating that the temporal profit function and the temporal shortage function are dual to one another. This result has two consequences. First, one can derive a shadow price path via the shadow prices of the temporal shortage function. Second, transposing the classic Farrell inefficiency decomposition, temporal profit efficiency is decomposed into temporal technical and temporal allocative efficiency components. Finally, in line with the recent literature on aggregation over firms, this contribution treats the possibilities and limits of the aggregation of efficiency measures over time.},

Omega 1999;27:241–58] article in several ways. First, instead of either proportionally contracting risk dimensions or proportionally expanding return dimensions, a more general efficiency measure simultaneously attempts to reduce risk and to expand return over all time periods. Second, a duality relation is established between this generalized multi-horizon efficiency measure and an indirect mean-variance utility function, underscoring the natural interpretation of this generalized efficiency measure in terms of investor's preferences. Furthermore, the need to properly apply time discounting in multi-horizon mean-variance portfolio problems is argued for. An empirical illustration based on the original mutual fund data set in Morey and Morey [Mutual fund performance appraisals: a multi-horizon perspective with endogenous benchmarking. Omega 1999;27:241–58] is added to contrast the new and the original approaches.},

Specifically, we consider the radial measure of Debreu (1951)/Farrell (1957) and the nonradial measures of Färe (1975), Färe and Lovell (1978) and Zieschang (1984). Furthermore, input-based, output-based, and graph efficiency versions of these four measures are computed. Theoretical consideration as to the best choice among these alternative measures is inconclusive; therefore, we examine this problem from an empirical viewpoint. Calculating thirteen different measures of technical efficiency for a sample of US banks, we compare the measures' efficiency distributions and rankings, paying particular attention to how well the radial measure approximates its nonradial alternatives.},

Specifically, we investigate whether different measures make any substantial difference for the explanation of the calculated inefficiencies. The empirical results suggest that more important differences in rankings exist between radial and nonradial measures than between different nonradial alternatives; moreover, the radial and nonradial efficiency measures do yield a somewhat different pattern of explanation.},

  abstract = {This paper provides a comprehensive survey of the literature on production and cost frontiers for public transit operators, and it evaluates the contributions of frontier analysis to the understanding of the performance of the public transport sector. The authors first succinctly contrast best practice (or frontier) and average practice specifications of technology. They also review relevant performance indicators and the methods to measure them. Next, the existing frontier studies measuring urban transit performance are systematically summarized and critically assessed. It is shown that the organization of the market, contract design, the degree and nature of the regulatory regime, and the characteristics of the network being served are all important determinants of ineffi ciency. However, although the frontier literature has substantially contributed to the knowledge of urban transit technologies and the determinants of performance, it is found that many important issues remain unresolved.},

  abstract = {We explore the effect of balancing unbalanced panel data when estimating primal productivity indices using non-parametric frontier estimators. First, we list a series of pseudo-solutions aimed at making an unbalanced panel balanced. Then, we discuss some intermediate solutions (e.g., balancing 2-years by 2 years). Furthermore, we link this problem with a variety of literatures on infeasibilities, statistical inference of non-parametric frontier estimators, and the index theory literature focusing on the dynamics of entry and exit in industries. We then empirically illustrate these issues comparing both Malmquist and Hicks–Moorsteen productivity indices on two data sets. In particular, we test for the differences in distribution when comparing balanced and unbalanced results for a given index and when comparing Malmquist and Hicks–Moorsteen productivity indices for a given type of data set. The latter tests are crucial in answering the question to which extent the Malmquist index can approximate the Hicks–Moorsteen index that has a Total Factor Productivity (TFP) interpretation. Finally, we draw up a list of remaining issues that could benefit from further exploration.},
